Afghanistan Conference

Asked if rumours were correct that the Afghanistan conference would be preceded by only a short two hour discussion on Yemen and if the Prime Minister thought that was sufficient time to discuss the issue, the PMS said the discussions on Yemen would be very important and include key representatives before the Afghanistan conference and any discussions would be focussed and productive.

Asked if leaders or foreign ministers would attend the Afghanistan conference, the PMS said it had always been the case that the invitations to the conference on Afghanistan had been to foreign ministers, but President Karzai would also be attending in addition to NATO Secretary General Rasmussen and General McChrystal.

Asked if Chancellor Merkel and President Sarkozy had been un-invited to the conference, the PMS said there had never been confirmation that any leaders would be involved and that invitations had gone out to foreign ministers.

Asked repeatedly if Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would be attending, the PMS said she had been invited but, as with all invitees, the UK Government had not yet publicly confirmed attendees due to security reasons.

Asked if the conference now looked less important because foreign ministers and not leaders would be involved in discussions, the PMS said this would be a very significant international conference with representatives from more than sixty countries.
