Ireland

Asked what would be discussed in the Prime Minister’s meeting with Brian Cowen, the PMS said that it would focus on the devolution of policing and justice in Northern Ireland. There had been a number of conversations taking place over the last few days. The Secretary of State had been in Dublin and Belfast and the Prime Minister had been in close touch with the party leaders in Northern Ireland. The Government’s overriding objective would be to complete the process of devolution.

Asked if there was a sense of building momentum surrounding the talks, the PMS said that the Prime Minister thought it was good news that these talks were continuing, during what was a complex and challenging time in the process.
