Haiti

On Haiti you will have heard what the PM said at PMQs: Because of the devastating earthquake overnight, Haiti has moved to the centre of the world’s thoughts and the world’s compassion. The Government will respond with emergency aid in fire-fighters, emergency equipment and finance. And we’ll give further support to help the people of Haiti recover from this devastating event.”

After that Douglas Alexander gave a statement to the House at 1230, updating MPs on our response. He confirmed that the UK has a four-person field assessment team en route to Port Au Prince in order to determine the priorities for urgent assistance. That we have mobilised a UK Fire and Rescue Service search and rescue team of 64 people with dogs and 10 tonnes of heavy rescue equipment. And that we are urgently looking at all options to ensure the search and rescue team can deploy as quickly as possible, including the possibility of an RAF flight.

The PM continues to be updated and our embassy in the Dominican Republic continue to monitor the situation. We have no reports so far of any British casualties.

The situation remains desperate and we will do what we can quickly.

Asked when the possibility of an RAF flight would be decided upon, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) told the assembled press that if there was any more information he would let people know when he could. The first issue was to get the small assessment team in to do a humanitarian assessment.
