Haiti

The Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) started by giving people the Prime Minister’s words on the terrible news overnight of the earthquake in Haiti. He said, “I am deeply saddened and worried about the reported scale of the earthquake in Haiti. I am sending a message of sympathy and support to President Preval and we are sending a team from the Department for International Development to assess the humanitarian needs. We stand ready to provide whatever humanitarian assistance is required.

Initial reports of extensive damage to infrastructure destruction and casualties were of great concern. Our embassy in the Dominican Republic was monitoring the situation and urgently seeking further information. We had no reports of any British casualties. On the humanitarian response we did not yet have a clear picture of needs from the Haitian authorities or from humanitarian agencies. We were monitoring the situation closely. Overnight we mobilised a DfID humanitarian assessment team to fly to Haiti today. We stood ready to provide whatever humanitarian assistance may be required.

Asked what the team from DfID would do in Haiti, the PMS said that they were planning to leave today and they would do an humanitarian assessment once they arrive in Haiti. There would be an Oral Statement in the House of Commons about this after PMQs.
