Gritting

Asked if there was any more information on the further measures mentioned by the PMS, the PMS said that he was quoting to people what the Secretary of State had said in the House of Lords. Lord Adonis had also said that these measures were likely to include further steps to conserve salt to ensure that the Highways Agency and local authorities could manage during the continuing severe weather. The Local Government Association and the Government were in constant contact and we would continue to take the necessary operational decisions to keep networks open as far as possible.

Asked what conserving salt would actually mean, the PMS said that there were several ways of conserving salt such as restricting use or getting salt from markets outside the UK. The PMS added that this was something that the Salt Cell would be looking at tomorrow but as and when there was further information on that we would let people know.

Asked if the Salt Cell met every day, the PMS said that it was meeting on a weekly basis.

Asked if there had been any response from Germany on the UK not delivering the salt it had promised them, the PMS replied that he wouldn’t characterise it in those terms. 12,000 tonnes of salt which was originally destined for Germany would now be diverted to the UK.
