Weather

The PMS said that these remained exceptional weather conditions. The Prime Minister continued to be updated regularly on the situation. The Prime Minister and Lord Adonis visited the London Local Authority Coordination Centre yesterday afternoon to see for themselves the work of many agencies and emergency services. Both he and Lord Adonis praised the work of emergency response staff around the country on the work they had been doing.

On the gritting and salt the Speaker had allowed an urgent question. The Prime Minister also had a number of calls this morning to update him on the situation. The Prime Minister had spoken to Harold James, MD of Salt Union (who provided two-thirds of the country’s salt supply), Lord Adonis, Sadiq Kahn, Graham Dalton, Chief Executive of Highways Agency Margaret Eaton Chair of LGA and David Nicholson Chief Executive of the NHS.

Asked about media reports that the Government had taken control of national grit salt supplies, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) said that the Government had not taken control of salt supplies and the issue of supply and distribution of grit salt was a job of local authorities and the highways agency. What the Prime Minister had being doing was ensuring any central government help that was required could be made available.
