Prime Minister’s Statement on Carwyn Jones:

“I want to congratulate Carwyn on his election as Leader of Welsh Labour. I know that both Edwina and Huw fought excellent campaigns, the whole process was a credit to the Labour party in Wales. Carwyn will be a true fighter for all the people of Wales. I know that Carwyn will make taking on the Tories a priority: they would be a change that Wales cannot afford.

“I understand that Rhodri will be standing down soon – he has been an inspirational leader in Wales for a decade of devolution. He has been a popular champion for Welsh and Labour values, and his innovative ProAct and ReAct schemes have helped the people of Wales to weather the global economic storm. Sarah and I want to send Rhodri and his family our best wishes for what I am sure will be an active retirement.”
