Iraq Inquiry

Asked if the Prime Minister had been called to give evidence, the PMS said that if the Prime Minister was to be called then he would cooperate fully. Asked what the Prime Minister’s response was to the evidence given today about construction after the invasion, the PMS replied that as he had said previously, we wouldn’t be giving a running commentary on the inquiry.

Asked if the Prime Minister would agree with Lord Mandelson’s comments at the Newspaper Society reception that Sir Christopher Meyer was an absurd individual , the PMS replied that he had been at the event and heard Lord Mandelson’s speech, which had focussed on the importance of regional development agencies and what they contributed to the country. The PMS added that any other remarks made by Lord Mandelson would have been made in a personal capacity.

Asked if Cabinet had discussed the inquiry this morning, the PMS said that they had not. Asked if the Prime Minister had a view on what had been dubbed the revenge of the mandarins , the PMS said that we wouldn’t be giving a day by day commentary on the inquiry. The Prime Minister thought it was an important independent inquiry and it was quite right that all the appropriate witnesses were asked to give evidence.
