Afghanistan

Asked if there had been any contact between the Prime Minister and Dr Abdullah around the presidential election, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister spoke to him in the run up to the first-round election result as well as President Karzai. The PM had said to both candidates that he welcomed the attitude they had taken toward the election process and had encouraged them to advise their supporters to make sure the second round went smoothly.

Asked if the Prime Minster supported Dr Abdullah’s call to replace the election chief in Afghanistan, the PMS replied that was a matter for the election authorities on the ground. The PMS reiterated the first round of elections had been bumpy and there had been evidence of fraud, however we were now within sight of the second round being completed and it was up to the local election authorities to make the appropriate decisions.
