Post Office

Asked whether the Prime Minister had been involved in any talks regarding the postal dispute, the PMS replied that he had not but was being constantly updated on it. Clearly this was a challenging situation; the two Ministers leading on this were Lord Mandelson and Pat McFadden and the Prime Minister shared the views of those Ministers, that it was important that the two sides got together and tried to avoid the prospect of a strike.

Asked if it was the Prime Minister s view that the two sides should get together with no pre-conditions as it had been mooted that the Royal Mail would only want to reference ACAS if the union agreed not to strike in the foreseeable future, the PMS said that any decision to use ACAS was up to both parties to be supportive of it. The Government would support this action and ACAS had said they were willing to step forward if required.

Asked if the Government was urging the two sides to talk, the PMS said that the Government would like to see anything that would prevent this strike from going ahead that was sensible and within the existing framework.
