Industrial relations

Asked what Pat McFadden and Lord Mandelson had said about the Post Office and Vauxhall at Cabinet, the PMS said that in regards to the Post Office Pat McFadden was keeping in touch with the appropriate unions, and met with the Communication Workers Union yesterday. The view was that a national strike would be self-defeating and we wanted to encourage the leaders of both parties to keep talking to each other and settle things before it became a more formal dispute.

In regards to Vauxhall it was best to speak to the Business Department.
