Northern Ireland

Asked how confident the Prime Minister was in regards to getting a deal on policing and justice in Northern Ireland before Christmas, the PMS said that the Prime Minister s meeting with leaders in Northern Ireland today was one of a series of meetings; the last one having taken place in New York. There was sense of momentum and further meetings were expected. The Prime Minister was keen to hold these meetings; he was meeting today with Peter Robinson and Martin McGuiness and other party leaders, as well as meeting with the new Chief Constable Matt Baggott.

Put that there was a suggestion that the Democratic Union Party thought that the Prime Minister was not honouring his Budget commitments to funding the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), the PMS said that the most important thing was that this meeting was taking place; there was a lot of business to get through, and if the mood was good, which it was sure to be, then there would be further progress.

Asked if the PSNI s budget was going to be cut, the PMS said that he would not comment further on the position in Northern Ireland other than what had been said about the meetings today.

Asked if there would be a press conference from Northern Ireland today, the PMS said that he thought it was unlikely.
