Cabinet

The PMS informed journalists that the Prime Minister had chaired cabinet at 0815. It had lasted just over an hour.

The Health Secretary gave an update on swine flu and planning for the vaccination programme.

The Education Secretary gave an update on the national challenge for schools and the next steps for achieving the Government s baseline targets for 30 per cent of schools to get Maths and English grades A C.

The Prime Minister gave a presentation on the five global challenges ahead of his visit to New York and Pittsburgh. As the Prime Minister had set out in his podcast earlier in the week they were: Climate Change, Tackling Poverty, Nuclear Non-proliferation, Terrorism and the Economy. On the Economy the Prime Minister had talked about the difficult choices the world faced and the need to move forward globally in order to protect the fragile economic recovery, maintaining fiscal stimulus that had been agreed at the G20 earlier in the year and moving towards creating a global compact for long-term growth, stability and jobs.

The Prime Minister spoke about the run up to the Copenhagen climate change summit and the need to build momentum and consensus. The cabinet noted the level to which the Prime Minister had personally led this agenda and tacked these global challenges.

As part of the discussion on fighting terrorism, the Prime Minister had spoken about the discussions he would have with President Obama on Afghanistan when he was in the United States. They would have detailed discussions in the margins of meetings they would attend together.

Asked how the Cabinet had noted the Prime Minister s leadership on climate change, the PMS said she would not comment on detail but there had been a general discussion.

Asked what the Health Secretary had told cabinet about the swine flu vaccine programme, the PMS said the Health Secretary gave an overall picture of how the disease had developed over the summer and what the action plan for the autumn would be. Journalists were referred to the Department of Health for detail and reminded of the regular updates from the Health Protection Agency.
