Climate change

Asked about the Prime Minister s article in Newsweek and whether he was urging other world leaders to join him in going to the Copenhagen Climate Change conference, the PMS said that the Prime Minister was concerned that we needed to get this deal done. The phrase the Prime Minister had used was that there was a possibility of the deal being in grave danger. The PMS said it was his understanding that it was not usual for a head of government to attend a meeting like this and the fact that the Prime Minister was prepared to go to clinch the deal, underlined the importance he was attaching to it.

The PMS said that the Prime Minister was the first leader from a developed country to propose a specific finance package, which involved a comprehensive proposal of 100billion per year by 2020 to help developing countries tackle climate change. The Greenpeace Executive Director had said today that the Prime Minister had injected a note of urgency into the Copenhagen talks by agreeing to attend.

Asked whether the Prime Minister would ask the Indian Prime Minister to attend the conference when they spoke on the phone later today, the PMS said if there was anything from the call that he could brief to journalists, he would do so.
