Departmental budgets

Asked what the Prime Minister s response was to Ed Balls saying that he could find 2billion worth of savings from the DCSF budget, the PMS replied that the important point was that the Prime Minister knew that all of his Ministers were looking for efficiencies. Ed Balls had been talking about further efficiencies that could be made further down the line in his department. No departmental budgets had been set for the years beyond 2010/11.
Asked why Ed Balls could not recognise those efficiencies a year ago, the PMS said that there had been ongoing programmes that all departments had been looking at. Ed Balls, along with other Ministers was keen to ensure that they pursued all the efficiencies they could.
