Afghanistan

Asked whether the Foreign Secretary would be raising the subject of Afghanistan while touring Europe, the PMS replied that the tour was very much focussed on Copenhagen.

Asked how concerned the Prime Minister was that a quarter of the votes cast in the Afghan elections could be fraudulent and what effect this could have on the troops on the ground, the PMS said that it had been an important election in Afghanistan and it was important that an international body was overseeing the election process. There were 6000 polling stations open during the election, which was a great credit to the way the election process had been run.

The Prime Minister was pleased that we had an international monitoring body in place and he was being updated on the progress of the elections. In terms of the troops, the Prime Minister had visited Afghanistan a short time ago and he had been able to spend a great deal of time with the troops; he had been impressed with their morale and delighted that he was able to see the new equipment coming into theatre.
