Spending Cuts
« Misc | Back to most recent briefing | AL Megrahi Release »
Asked if there was any comment on the Guardian story about the Prime Minister and the Chancellor outlining a programme of spending cuts, the PMS said that the Prime Minister and the Chancellor were completely aligned on public spending. Any decisions on public spending were a matter for the Chancellor in the PBR. The Government was very proud of its record in investing in frontline public services.
Asked if the Prime Minister still believed that Government measures had saved 500,000 jobs, the PMS replied that there were various numbers that had been mentioned in relation to this, but it was quite difficult to calibrate this precisely as it depended on what was meant by saving jobs. However, that was the sort of figure that people would acknowledge was relevant.
