AL Megrahi Release

Put that Ed Balls had said this morning that no one wanted to see Mr Al Megrahi released, the PMS said that the Government s position was as set out by the Prime Minister last week in his statement.

Asked if Ed Balls was right to say that no one had wanted Mr Al Megrahi to be released, the PMS said that the Prime Minister had set out the position last week and he would not go beyond what the Prime Minister had said.

Put that the Government s stance had changed on the issue, the PMS said that the most important point was that this was a decision for the Scottish Executive. The Prime Minister and other members of the Government had been very clear that whatever peoples views might be, this was a decision that the UK Government had no influence over.

Put that the Prime Minister had not given his view on whether Mr Al Megrahi should be released, the PMS said that what the Prime Minister had talked about was respecting the process and the decision itself.
