Economy

Asked if the Prime Minister agreed with the Business Secretary that more needed to be done to safeguard the interests of the City, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister believed that the financial services sector was an important part of the UK economy. We had already set out the steps that we needed to see to reform the financial services sector and we were pressing ahead with that.

Asked if the Prime Minister believed that the Chancellor was not doing enough to safeguard the interests of the City, the PMS said that in relation to the article concerned, that comment was not attributed to Lord Mandelson but to an unnamed source and he would not get drawn on it.
