Asked whether the Prime Minister agreed with the comments made by Ben Bradshaw, the PMS said that Ben Bradshaw had been clear that he viewed the BBC as a unique, high-quality broadcaster. He was a champion of the BBC and was committed to its future. The specific issue in relation to the BBC that came out of the Digital Britain Report was how to ensure the future of local and regional news. We knew that this was something that was much valued by the public and we had put forward our proposals as to how we thought the future of regional and local news could best be secured, by using a small fraction of the licence fee.
We had always been clear that if other people had other proposals then of course we would look at those, but we were not aware of any other realistic proposals being put forward. Put that Ben Bradshaw had said that the BBC suffered from poor leadership, the PMS said that Ben Bradshaw had been clear that he viewed the BBC as a unique and high-quality broadcaster and he was a champion of the BBC and the values that it stood for.
