Asked why the Government would not have a Spending Review if it was having a Defence Review, the Prime Minister s Spokesman (PMS) told the assembled press that the reasons for the Defence Review were set out in the WMS that Bob Ainsworth had published this afternoon; he had set out the reasons why we periodically have them, their nature and their purpose. The position on the Spending Review had been gone over many times. Asked if it was fair to say that everything was up for gabs in the Defence Review, the PMS said that the Ministry of Defence had set out in the WMS what the process would be. As a first step the MOD would undertake an examination of a range of issues including the strategic context for defence, the lessons we had recently learnt from recent operations, technological changes in defence and the modern day requirements and aspirations of our armed forces personnel. Asked if this was a first step towards getting rid of Trident, the PMS replied that the position on Trident was set out in the 2006 White Paper and that remained unchanged.
