Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR)

Asked about the Government s response to the IPPR report and specifically about aircraft carriers, the PMS said that there were a number of aspects of this report that we would agree with and a number that we wouldn t agree with. In terms of carriers more generally Bill Rammell had been speaking on the radio this morning; we announced our updated schedule for the timing of the aircraft carriers procurement last December. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) constantly examined and re-examined the costings in all of these matters in a very rigorous way in order to ensure that there was best value for money for the taxpayer. The MoD would publish their accounts next month, which would present their latest estimate and costings, but we should be clear that the new carriers would represent significant enhancements to our current capability, enabling us to deliver air power from the sea at a time and place of our choosing.

Asked what things the Government disagreed with in the IPPR report, the PMS said that he would not get into a point-by-point analysis of the report; it was an interesting and useful contribution to the debate.
