Prime Minister’s Spokesman

The Prime Minister s Spokesman (PMS) began by saying that, subject to finalising detailed arrangements, Simon Lewis would be joining the Prime Minister s Office as Director of Communications and the Prime Minister s Official Spokesman in July.

Asked if Simon Lewis would be a Civil Servant or a Special Advisor, the PMS said that Mr Lewis would be a direct replacement, so he would be a Civil Servant and would therefore be bound by the Civil Service Code.

Asked why Simon Lewis had been offered the job, the PMS said that Simon Lewis was a very experienced public relations professional with a very strong track record working in both the public and private sectors.

Asked if it was unusual to bring someone from outside into a senior Civil Service position, the PMS said that Simon Lewis had been appointed for the reasons previously set out; this process was over seen by the Cabinet Secretary.
