Put that the level of British troops in Afghanistan would be increased over the election period before returning to pre-election levels and asked if the Prime Minister was satisfied with this, the PMS said that the Prime Minister set out the position on troops in his statement on 29 April where he said that we would increase our levels to provide support ahead of the elections, which was on the advice of the commanders on the ground and senior members of the armed forces. Any further decisions on troops would involve discussions with those same individuals and with our allies in Afghanistan.
