Bermuda

Asked about the Prime Minister s response to the Bermudan Government releasing four people from Guantanamo, the PMS said that the Foreign Office had been giving their response and briefing on the latest developments. We had made clear to the Bermudan Government the need for a security assessment in relation to these individuals and we were now helping them to carry that out. Not all the individuals had travel documents and therefore would not be able to travel to the UK. We would decide on further steps as appropriate, but in general we were working with the Bermudan Government to address all the issues that had arisen from this and had made clear that they should have consulted us on this decision.

Asked if the Prime Minister or Foreign Secretary had raised objections with the US administration about the way this had been handled, the PMS said that David Miliband had spoken to Secretary Clinton in the last day. The primary responsibility for ensuring that the constitutional requirements were adhered to lay with the Bermudan Government. We had been discussing, and would continue to discuss, issues including Guantanamo Bay with the US administration.
