Downing Street Says » Shahid Malik

Put that new information today suggested that Shahid Malik had another office he was claiming for, the PMS said that there were lots of questions being asked of lots of MPs across the House of Commons. The particular issue that had arisen in relation to Shahid Malik s role in Government was whether or not he had violated the Ministerial Code, which was the issue that had been investigated by Sir Philip Mawer. Sir Philip Mawer had concluded that there was not a violation of the Ministerial Code. Other questions about Shahid Malik s expenses would be addressed in the way that all other MPs expenses would be addressed; there will be a process by which an independent panel would look at every MP s expense claim and the Prime Minister believed that was the right way forward.

Asked what the Prime Minister meant when he said that he was satisfied with all the MPs he had appointed to Government in terms of expenses, the PMS said that the Prime Minister expected all Ministers to behave in a way that was consistent with the Ministerial Code otherwise they wouldn t be Ministers.

Asked repeatedly if the Prime Minister was currently satisfied that Shahid Malik had at all times complied with Parliamentary rules regarding expenses, the PMS said that if anyone had any particular allegations regarding Shahid Malik breaking the Ministerial Code then they should make them. If there were any issues relating to the Ministerial Code then the Prime Minister s independent advisor on the Ministerial Code would look at them, however it was not apparent that any such allegations had been made at this point.

Asked if it was reasonable to say that the PMS had not endorsed Shahid Malik s use of Parliamentary expenses, the PMS said no; if there were any allegations against Shahid Malik they should be made so as Mr Malik could have to opportunity to respond to them.

Asked if it was the case that the Cabinet Office were examining Ministers financial interests, the PMS said that the Cabinet Office were doing what it felt was necessary in order to ensure that the Prime Minister could be satisfied that Ministers were complying with the Ministerial Code.
