Asked if there would be an announcement this week on the Iraq inquiry, the PMS said that the Prime Minister and the Government had said that the time would come when an inquiry into Britain s role in Iraq would be appropriate. The Prime Minister was consulting the Cabinet Secretary in what the appropriate form of the inquiry could be, but we were not in a position to make a formal announcement at this point.
