Royal Mail

Asked if there had been any change of policy regarding Royal Mail, the PMS said that Lord Mandelson had been answering questions on this yesterday and set out the Government position.

Asked if the Government was going ahead with the Bill in the House of Commons, the PMS said that Lord Mandelson confirmed yesterday that the Bill was going ahead. During the third reading debate in May Lord Mandelson said that any strategic partner should be motivated to modernise the Royal Mail over the long-term and should offer values for money for the taxpayer; we would not do a deal at any price. During Lord Mandelson s BBC Scotland interview on 10th May he referred to the difficult economic conditions and the effect that was having on the market for postal services across Europe.
