MPs’ Expenses

Asked when the Prime Minister would see Sir Philip Mawer s report into Shahid Malik s expenses, the PMS said that there was nothing new to say on the subject at this point.

Asked if the Prime Minister would be bringing forward any new proposals, the PMS said that this was clearly not the end of the matter. What we had seen over the last week was firstly, action being taken to deal with inappropriate claims made in the past and it was the Prime Minister s view that it was not sufficient for individual MPs to simply decide how much they should repay. Where repayment was necessary there needed to be a thorough independent process for looking into the subject and assessing every claim of every MP in the last four years.

Secondly, we needed to address what we did on an interim basis in order to deal with some of these issues. There had been discussion on a cross-party basis within the Committee for Members Allowances to look at how we could tighten up the regime around the second homes allowance, including proposals to stop the payments of fixtures and fittings and mortgage interests. There was a much bigger set of questions for the future about how we could rebuild public trust in the workings of Parliament.
