The Speaker

Asked if there was any change to the Prime Minister s position on the Speaker, the Prime Minister s Spokesman (PMS) told the assembled press that the Prime Minister had set out his position on the Speaker earlier today and that remained the position.

Asked if the Government would allow the motion to be debated, the PMS said that this was something for the business managers to consider at the appropriate time. Asked whether the Prime Minister would be willing to take part in the meeting suggested by the Speaker, the PMS replied that we had no more information on that. If the Speaker was calling a meeting of the party leaders then the Prime Minister would expect to attend.

Asked if it was acceptable for the Speaker to suppress debate in the House of Commons on his own future, the PMS said that issues relating to the Speaker were best addressed to the Speaker. In relation to the Government, the position was as set out this morning; the business managers were considering this motion, just as they considered many other motions during the course of a parliamentary week.

Asked if the Prime Minister had a view on whether this was a good or bad thing to be debated, the PMS said that the Prime Minister thought that this was for the business managers to take a view on at the appropriate time.
