MPs’ Expenses

Asked if the Prime Minister was prepared to consider disciplinary action against any members of his Government over expenses, the PMS said that the Government had been answering questions in relation to this consistently for the last three or four days. He said we had made clear that individual ministers had given their explanations for the action that they have taken and the issues that relate to them and that s where things stood.

Asked if the Prime Minister thought it was appropriate, as David Cameron seemed to, for money to be paid back by any MPs who had claimed excessive expenses, the PMS remarked that in relation to MPs who are also Government Ministers, that the individual MPs have given the explanations for their particular circumstances and that is where things stood.

Asked if the assembled press could then assume that the Prime Minister accepted each and every one of those explanations, the PMS said the Government had been saying consistently over the past few days that the individual Ministers had given their explanations and that the Prime Minister accepted the explanations that had been given to him.

Asked what the Prime Minister meant in his speech at the RCN yesterday when he said wrongs needed to be righted and what did he think the wrongs were, the PMS said the Prime Minister was speaking generally about the reforms that needed to be made to the allowances system.

Asked to clarify that the Prime Minister was not considering any form of action against Government Ministers found to have claimed excessively, other than the sanction of the voters to turf them out at a general election, the PMS said the individual Ministers had given their explanations, the Prime Minister had heard and accepted their explanations and that is where things stood.
