Hazel Blears

Asked for the Prime Minister s view of Hazel Blears following the publication of her article in the Observer over the weekend, the Prime Minister s Spokesman (PMS) said that Hazel Blears had given her own views on the article in a statement she released on Saturday.

Asked if the Prime Minister had full confidence in Hazel Blears, the PMS said yes.

Asked if the Prime Minister agreed with the thrust of Hazel Blears argument that the Government needed to communicate its message better, the PMS said that the Prime Minister was concerned with whether or not we were taking the right action in order to help the country get through this difficult period. Ultimately, the public wanted to know that this was a government that was on their side, helping them through this downturn and preparing a stronger and fairer country for the future.

Put that the Prime Minister s use of YouTube showed that he thought about communication, the PMS said that the Prime Minister would use any form of media to communicate his message but it was important not to lose sight of the bigger issue, which was whether this was a government that was making the right decisions for the country.

Asked if the Prime Minister was satisfied that the Cabinet was now one hundred per cent united, the PMS said that the Prime Minister was satisfied that the Cabinet was supporting the agenda that he was setting out and that they were coming together in order to deal with the big issues facing the country. That was very much the mood at Cabinet this morning where they had an update from Alan Johnson and the Chief Medical Officer on swine flu, which was a matter of concern to many people in the country, and they also had a good discussion about the economy. The Prime Minister would also be setting out his views on the future of the education system in a speech this morning; those were the issues the Prime Minister was focusing on, as the public would expect.

Asked if the Prime Minister felt it necessary at Cabinet this morning to talk to Ministers about discipline, the PMS said that the issue didn t come up; Cabinet was focusing on the issues facing the country, which at the moment were swine flu, the economy and the future of our public services.
