Afghanistan

Asked what the mechanism would be to encourage European partners to do more to help in Afghanistan, like training police etc, the PMS replied that NATO was that mechanism and there were regular meetings of NATO Foreign Ministers and Defence Ministers and that well-established mechanisms were in place both in Iraq and Afghanistan and at NATO headquarters. He said the Government would continue to work through NATO to enhance burden-sharing in Afghanistan. At the suggestion this had not worked for six years, and asked what was different about the new strategy, the PMS said he didn’t accept this and that the NATO summit in Strasbourg had resulted in an extra 5,000 troops for the election period, which indicated progress.
