Asked for the Prime Minister s reaction to the comments made by Gerry Adams, the Prime Minister s Spokesman (PMS) told the assembled press that the Prime Minister s general view was that what we had seen in the last 24 hours or o had been strong reactions right across the community and that included Sinn Fein. That was in recognition of that fact that the old days of violence in Northern Ireland are very much part of the past. There was clearly a very strong commitment right across the spectrum in Northern Ireland to push ahead with the peace process and we were seeing that from the statements that everybody was making. Asked if the Prime Minister was satisfied that Sinn Fein was committed to the peace process, the PMS said that we were satisfied that Sinn Fein were fully committed to the peace process and we had seen that in the statements of the last 24 hours. Asked if the Prime Minister would be meeting Gerry Adams while he was in Northern Ireland, the PMS replied that it was his understanding that the Prime Minister would be meeting the First Minister and Deputy First Minister. Asked whether the Prime Minister was satisfied that Sinn Fein were doing enough to pass on information about the incident, the PMS said that Gerry Adams had answered that question this morning and he had made it clear that if anyone had information then they should make that known to the relevant authorities. Asked whether the Prime Minister supported the decision to send army intelligence units into Northern Ireland, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister was completely supportive of all of the decisions taken by our security agencies in relation to Northern Ireland. Asked if this would cause a wider step-change review of security levels, the PMS said that that was clearly a matter for the relevant authorities. In relation to Northern Ireland, Brigadier Norton was answering questions on this, this morning and was making clear that this was something that they did keep under continuous review. Asked if the Prime Minister agreed with Gerry Adams that it was just as painful for the families of terrorists killed by the security forces, the PMS said that this issue came up a couple of weeks ago in relation to a report that was published in northern Ireland and the Prime Minister made his views very clear in PMQ s on the day.
