Asked for an explanation as to why the news conference this afternoon had been downgraded and whether the working lunch with President Obama would still take place, the PMS replied that he did not accept the premise of the question on media availability, which would still go ahead; there would still be a meeting with the media in the White House during the course of the day. There would still be a working lunch.
Asked whether the press conference was now shorter than anticipated, the PMS said that we wanted to maximise the time the leaders had to talk. Put that it was a UK decision rather than a US decision, the PMS replied that we were in talks with the White House on the exact format of that media availability. Asked if the two leaders would be meeting for the same amount of time, the PMS confirmed that they would be.
Asked what a media availability was, the PMS said the exact nature of it was still to be decided by the team in Washington, so it was best to wait and see. Asked if it would be a joint event, the PMS said that it would be.
