Miscellaneous

Asked if the Prime Minister was going to review the policy of sending parents to jail over control of their children, the PMS replied that he was not aware of any plans to change our position on this.

Asked if the Prime Minister was relaxed about the number of freebies taken by mandarins, and did he think they should cut them down now we were in the middle of a recession, the PMS replied that this was one interpretation that people might put on it – an alternative interpretation might be that officials, in a way just like journalists, need to maintain and build a strong network of contacts external to the Government in support of the work of their department, and it would be unusual if people in senior positions in the Civil Service were not in regular contact with people outside their department.

Asked when the last time the Budget was held as late as the 22 April, the PMS replied that he certainly knew there had been Budgets in April.
