Dutch MP

Asked if Jacqui Smith contacted the Prime Minister at all before banning Geerst Wilders the PMS replied that he was not going to get into which Minister had spoken to whom, but the Prime Minister fully supported the decision taken by the Home Secretary.

Asked if the same thing would happen if someone had views against Christianity, the PMS replied that the Government looked at each individual case on its merits. The decision was taken by the Home Secretary in this particular case, in accordance to the powers that she had at her disposal.

  1. Jacqui Smith has played straight into the hands of the Far Right Wing. She should have seen this coming, she should have handled it by allowing it to quietly go ahead. To ban is idiotic, counterproductive and is quite simply the action of a politician out of her depth, one that is far too worried about upsetting Muslims in the UK than applying the rules evenly. There are many other undesirables in the UK right now but because there were no threats of mass riots by Muslims, nothing was done. Smith has made a huge error and has aided the hard right at the same time. With each and every attempt to stifle debate, they send more to the extremes of politics. Idiotic and entirely predictable – shame on you Smith.
