Asked for the Prime Minister’s view regarding Jacqui Smith’s expenses, the PMS said that the Home Secretary’s office had made a statement in response to this and had made it clear that the Home Secretary had always abided fully with Parliament’s clear rules on expenses, and that she had longstanding written approval from the Parliamentary Fees Office for any agreed expenses. Asked if the Prime Minister was confident that the Home Secretary had acted in accordance with the spirit of the rules, the PMS said that Home Secretary’s office had made clear that she had abided fully with the rules on expenses, and as far as the Prime Minister was concerned that’s where things stood. Put that if bankers were being asked to forgo their bonuses, Cabinet members could be asked to forgo some of their expenses, the PMS said that there was a difference between this particular issues regarding the Home Secretary and the near collapse of the British banking system that we had witnessed over the passed six months. Asked if the Prime Minister retained full confidence in the Home Secretary, the PMS said yes. Briefing took place at 16:45 | Search for related news Original PMOS briefings are © Crown Copyright.
