Car Scrapping
« Manufacturing Figures | Back to most recent briefing | President Sarkozy »
Put that 75% of cars in the UK were imported and wouldn t this measure help other countries rather than the UK, the PMS replied that Lord Mandelson had spoken about the measure in his speech last night. Scrappage schemes were an interesting idea and we needed to look at how they might work in practice, but we were not yet convinced how a scrappage scheme would provide a stimulus for demand and we would continue to assess it on the basis of evidence and cost and benefits within the industry.
Asked if it would not make sense to introduce a pan-European scheme, the PMS said that we were looking in the first instance at a national scheme, but the PMS emphasised that we were just looking at it at the moment. Asked how close the Government was to making a decision, the PMS said that that was a question that people would need to direct to BERR.
