David Milliband

Put that the Indian Prime Minister had sent a letter to the Prime Minister complaining about David Miliband’s behaviour on his recent trip to India and had the Prime Minister received that letter, the PMS said that he would check but we had not received the letter as of earlier this morning.

In relation to the more general point, the Foreign Office had been responding on behalf of the Foreign Secretary and they had been making clear that the comments he had made were made in India and Pakistan. The Foreign Office had also been explaining the wider context in which his comments should be interpreted.

Asked whether the Prime Minister was aware of the criticism within India about the content of the speech and the choice of venue, the PMS repeated that the Foreign Secretary had made those comments in both India and Pakistan. We had a strong relationship with India and we would continue to have a strong relationship with India.
