Asked if the merger between the Halifax Bank of Scotland and Lloyds would go ahead, the PMS said that the Government s position on this remained unchanged.

Asked if recapitalisation would still go ahead if the merger talks were called off, the PMS said that he was not going to get into hypothetical questions about very market sensitive matters; our position on this had been set out very clearly by the Treasury and that remained the position.
