Economy

Asked why the Prime Minister chose to use the word recession having refused all invitations preciously, the PMS replied that it was simply a reflection of developments we had seen in the global economy in recent weeks, as the Prime Minister himself said, we must take action on the global financial recession, this was likely to cause recession not only in Britain but in America, France, Italy, Germany and Japan.

Asked if the Prime Minister coordinated his decision to use the word recession with the Governor of the Bank of England, the PMS replied that the Governor of the Bank of England spoke for himself.

Asked if the Prime Minister knew that the Governor of the Bank of England was going to use the word yesterday, the PMS replied that the Governor of the Bank of England decided entirely himself what he said in his speeches.

Asked if it was helpful nevertheless to talk about recession as an attempt to prepare the public for bad times ahead, the PMS replied that it was just a statement of the reality as the Prime Minister and the Governor of the Bank of England now saw it.

Asked when the Prime Minister thought we would technically enter into a recession, the PMS replied that the Treasury would update its forecasts in the Pre-Budget Report in the usual way.

Asked for details of the various meetings mentioned by the Prime Minister at PMQs this afternoon, the PMS replied that this was a reference to a statement that the White House had put out this afternoon on the meting of world leaders that would now take place on the 15th November.

Asked if there would be any other meetings, the PMS replied that it was possible that there may be further meetings but the White House statement referred to the 15th November meeting.

Asked if there were any details yet on the agenda, the PMS replied that as hosts it was best for the Americans to comment on the agenda.
