Put that Patricia Hewitt and others had advised the Prime Minister to drop 42 days, the PMS said that the Government s position on 42 days remained the same as set out in lobby yesterday; the Prime Minister believed that the 42 days proposal was the right proposal. It had been voted on by the House of Commons and we would continue to make our case vigorously in the House of Lords. Asked if the subject of 42 days had come up at the Cabinet meeting this morning, the PMS said that it had been mentioned in passing but that there had been no substantive discussion.
