Asked whether the Prime Minister had taken the opportunity to reaffirm the UK s backing for Georgia to become a member of NATO, the PMS said that the Prime Minster had done so. Our position on Georgian NATO membership was unchanged. The NATO Summit in April had made the in principle decision that the Ukraine and Georgia should join NATO, but of course that could not happen straight away and there was a proper process that needed to be gone through.
Asked if the Prime Minister had seen Condoleezza Rice s comments overnight about Russia, the PMS said that we were always in very close contact with the US administration on Russia and other issues.
