Zimbabwe

Asked for the Government s thoughts on the power-sharing deal, the PMS replied that we congratulated President Mbeki s efforts to broker a deal between Zanu PF and the MDC, but we would of course need to study the detail. In principle, we stood ready to support Zimbabwe s new administration to bring about much needed change, but the extent and nature of our support would be determined by the actions that the new administration took on the ground. Asked whether the Prime Minister had any plans to speak to Morgan Tsvangirai, the PMS said that if there were any discussions of that nature, we would keep people posted.
