Ministerial Posts

Asked if it was the Government s policy that any Labour MP who asked for nomination papers who had a role in the Government would lose their job, the PMS replied that he would be at risk of straying into party political territory and he would not start answering hypothetical questions about what individuals may or may not say in the future. Put that on the basis of what had taken place so far and the fact that ministerial jobs were a Government matter, could people assume that that was the position, the PMS said the position had been made fairly clear in the last couple of days.

Asked to confirm that Barry Gardiner had lost his job, the PMS said that Barry Gardiner was no longer the Prime Minister s Special Representative on Forestry Matters. Asked when that had happened, the PMS said that it had happened by mutual consent over the weekend. When we were in a position to make announcements on future special representatives, we would do so.

Asked whether the Prime Minister had had time to talk to MP s about such matters, the PMS replied that what the Prime Minister was finding time to do was to concentrate on the issues that mattered to the country and the big issues that faced the country at the moment were the situation in the economy and what was happening in financial markets. The PMS added that the Prime Minister was also focussing a lot of effort on Northern Ireland ahead of his visit tomorrow and we had Jacqui Smith making announcements tomorrow on youth crime.

Asked to characterise the Prime Minister s mood, the PMS said that what the Prime Minister was concerned about and what he was doing was focussing on the big issues that mattered to the people of the country.

Asked if the Prime Minister was concerned that calls for a leadership contest would distract or undermine his ability to deal with these issues, the PMS repeated that he would not be drawn into party political territory. All he could say was to reiterate what he had said earlier and make clear that as far as the Prime Minister was concerned, he was focussing on the big issues affecting the British people. Put that it had been suggested that the news of MP s seeking nomination papers came from No10, the PMS replied that that was not a question for him.
