Asked for a reaction to President Musharraf stepping down this morning, the PMS replied that there would be a fuller reaction from the Foreign Office later, but he could say that during President Musharraf s time in office we had seen a deepening of UK/Pakistan relations, and we wished him well in the future. Relations between the UK and Pakistan did not depend on individuals, and as we had made clear we supported measures that promoted strong democratic institutions which lead to greater stability, democracy and rule of law in Pakistan.
Asked if we would welcome Mr Musharraf if he wanted to settle in the UK, the PMS replied that he was not going to get into speculation about Mr Musharraf s future plans.
