Put that the chairman of the US Federal Reserve had said that the economic crisis was intensifying and was that a view that the Prime Minister shared, the PMS said he had not seen the comments or the context of them, but the Chancellor had been speaking about the British economy and that would probably be the best summary of where we were in terms of the Government’s view on the economy.

Asked how long the Prime Minister expected to stay on holiday this summer, the PMS said that he was not in a position at this point to confirm anything about the Prime Minister’s holiday plans, but as and when we were in a position to confirm them, we would let people know.

Asked about the Prime Minister’s view on China starting up the licensed trade in ivory, the PMS said that the UK, along with other European member states would take account of all the information available, including from CITES, secretariat visits, third country visits and reports from NGO’s before taking any decisions to approve or oppose China as a trading partner.

Asked what the Prime Minister’s view was on tipping, the PMS said that the Government believed that we should make tipping fairer and more transparent. BERR were already looking very carefully at the options available and hoped to make an announcement on this shortly.
