Embryology Bill

Asked why the Embryology Bill had been delayed, the PMS replied that Harriet Harman had given an explanation to that question today during Business Questions.

Put that the Bill had been delayed due to cynical manoeuvring regarding a forthcoming by-election and not because of the business of the House, the PMS said that Harriet Harman had rejected that claim earlier today when she explained the reasons for the change in timings of upcoming business.

Asked repeatedly if the Bill had been discussed in Cabinet this morning, the PMS said that there had been a general discussion of upcoming Parliamentary business.

Asked repeatedly when the Prime Minister had found out that the Embryology Bill was to be postponed, the PMS said that he was not going to get into internal Government discussions. The position had been announced by Harriet Harman at Business Questions, when she set out the future business of the House.

Asked where that left scientists in Newcastle who were looking into stem cell research, the PMS repeated what Harriet Harman had said at Business Questions; the Embryology Bill was a very important piece of Government legislation and would be brought forward after the summer recess.
