G8 Summit, Japan

Asked if business in Japan had finished for today, the PMS said that they had concluded discussions on the world economy, development and the environment. Political issues would be discussed over dinner.

Asked if there would be any statements, the PMS said that there were communiques on both the world economy and on the environment and climate change. The communique on development, including Africa, would be published on the G8 website shortly.

Asked if the Prime Minister had been impressed with the 19 course dinner in Japan and if he had had to forgo any courses, the PMS said that the Prime Minister had been asked this question and that the point to make was that while the Prime Minister didn’t want to see unnecessary expenditure, he recognised that he was in Japan, hosted by the Japanese Government and therefore would eat Japanese food.
